Bookie

I couldn’t find a good solution for managing my lady’s day spa, so I built one from the ground up. Bookie is a hybrid Rails application with a Backbone.js powered custom-built calendar. It sports a gorgeous UI in collaboration with Lance Troxel.

Pete Droge

Pete Droge’s original Flash website is a highly interactive experience I coded from scratch. Impressed by the integration of Drupal and Flash, Adobe hired me to polish up and open source the code which became the Services Module for Drupal.

Classroom Cookbook

Classroom Cookbook is a tool for students and alumni at Boston College to collaborate on and share lesson plans. It is a hybrid Rails application with a custom admin backend.

BC101

BC101 is a tool to engage first-year students at Boston College as they orient themselves to the campus. This Rails application features LDAP login integration, and a custom badge awarding system.

Auditioner

Auditioner is a unique online auditioning service to connect musicians with people hiring talent. This Rails application features a custom video upload and encoding solution leveraging Brightcove’s Zencoder service.

This is Personal

At This by Them, we worked with Weber Shandwick on This is Personal, a digital campaign for women’s reproductive rights. The website is built on Drupal, but we built a custom Backbone.js app with tight Facebook integration.

Digital Dollhouse

I was part of the original team that built Digital Dollhouse, a virtual placespace for kids. My role was as sole ActionScript developer for the main application, and handling the integration with the backend apis.

Want to work with me?

I work remotely with clients all over the world and occasionally onsite in Southern California.

I practice agile, test-driven development with Ruby on Rails and JavaScript frameworks like jQuery, Backbone.js and Ember.js.

I have over a decade of experience planning, building, managing, and occasionally designing projects of all different kinds.

I write code that is clean, readable, and maintainable. I believe the best products are a marriage of beautiful design and beautiful code.

We can build a prototype or MVP app from the ground up, or I can build new features and fix bugs for your existing app.

What is my process?

Chances are you have other team members and an agile process in place. Perfect, I’ll fit right in.

If you don’t have an agile process in place, that’s fine too. Here’s what we’ll do. At the start of each week iteration, we’ll meet and agree on a set of deliverables to work on. Each day, we’ll meet briefly and go over progress. We’ll collaborate in realtime using a project management tool of your choice. At the end of the week, we’ll meet again, celebrate what shipped, and discuss next steps. Then, we lather, rinse and repeat. No long-term contracts, no-lock in. We can fire each other at any time. Here’s my contract.

What is my schedule?

I had to learn the hard way that coding 24/7 is not good for me. These days I work at a “sustainable pace.” Monday through Thursday (roughly 9 to 5 pacific time), I work on client projects. Fridays, I work on my own projects. On the weekends, I play and hang with my family. It’s all about balance.

Any deal breakers?

If any of the following is true, we probably won’t be a good fit.

What do I charge?

I book one major project at a time at a rate of $3,750 per week. I can also do a 16 or 32 hour monthly retainer at a cost of $2,500 or $5k per month (limited to one or two clients at a time).

If you have a greenfield project, or you don’t yet know your scope, you can buy a Roadmapping session with me for $750, and we’ll break down the project together for a proper estimate. Most engagements I take on range from one to three months, though I’m open to longer term opportunities.

100% money back guarantee.

Finding a good Rails freelancer can be tough.

That’s why I’ve made working with me super simple and risk-free…

Hire me for just one week and if I don’t completely blow your mind, I’ll give you your money back.

Yep, that’s right.

If you’re not 100% stoked on the quality of my work, the depth of my knowledge, and the clarity in my communication, then I haven’t earned your money, and I will give it all back.

I’m looking for a few good clients who are working on amazing things, and need a rock-solid developer to help them make it happen. If that’s you, I think we should talk.

Haven’t hit the back button yet?

Good. Email me@scotty.is and let’s talk about your project.

I’m @snels on twitter, and @snelson on github.
